Bob Watson, Newgate Group Chairman and Paul Campbell, SAFERsleep General Manager at the signing of the UK marketing agreement in Auckland.
Newgate is marketing the SAFERsleep system in the UK as the first third-party system to be totally integrated with Nexus Pre-Assessment and Nexus Theatre. The completed SAFERsleep anaesthetics record can also be viewed from within Nexus EPR as part of the Nexus Electronic Patient Record.
Integration of the SAFERsleep system was made particulalry easy due to the use of Newgate's standard third-party system integration technology.
The SAFERsleep System is a set of procedures and devices for organising the anaesthetic work area as well as SAFERsleep software which provides drug safety cross checks and produces a comprehensive anaesthetic patient record.
The SAFERsleep software is installed on a workstation which consists of a touch screen computer, barcode reader and keyboard attached via a mounting arm to the anaesthetic machine.
The position of the SAFERsleep workstation enables the anaesthetist to easily enter data as part of their practice. The patient's physiological data is downloaded directly from anaesthetic monitor data into the software (machine dependent).
The anaesthetist enters other information about the patient's management using templates, barcodes, touch screen and keyboard. This data is collated into a time-related, accurate patient record.
System Benefits:
1 Simply Safer for everyone
The SAFERsleep System significantly reduces the incidence of drug error in anaesthesia by 35%. The System's barcode drug crosscheck is unique in the market, providing visual and audio reinforcement of a drug before it's administered
2 Easy to use and learn
Designed by anaesthesia professionals the system is easy to adopt and learn. Within four procedures a user will learn the core functionality of the SAFERsleep System. Barcode scanning minimises interaction with the workstation and the touch screen monitor allows for easy data entry.
3 Better patient information
The SAFERsleep PREOP system easily collates and tracks pre-operative patient history, examination data, medications, allergies as well as an anaesthetic risk assessment and patient consent prior to surgery. The System enables patient management as well as time and status tracking from referral to surgery.
4 Clinical drug alerts
Electronic reminders enhance patient safety. The SAFERsleep System has built in repetitive audio and visual alerts for the clinician. These occur when an antibiotic is not administered prior to surgery or a drug is administered to a patient with a known drug allergy.
5 Rapid accurate drug data
The SAFERsleep System increases the accuracy of drug administration recording and produces a legible structured report. Results have shown 13 minutes per case can be saved transcribing and processing anaesthetic records for pharmacy billing and inventory purposes. SAFERsleep records capture 21.7% more drug administration data than hand written records.
6 User-specific templates
SAFERsleep System individual user templates enable quick and easy data recording. Templates allow rapid entry of recurring instructions and prescriptions for similar procedures.
7 Time related patient records
The printed record graphically presents time related data on the patient's physiological responses aligned with anaesthetic inhalation gases and administered drugs and fluids. This provides a legible, easy to interpret patient record for post-operative care staff and pain management teams. The clear timerelated patient record provides powerful evidence for medical legal defense.
8 Comprehensive database
The SAFERsleep database is a valuable asset. This data-rich repository can be used by hospital management and administration to analyse resource utilisation and cost effectiveness. It can also be used by clinical staff for analysing patient management trends, clinical outcomes and research.
9 An Aid to accreditation
The SAFERsleep System facilitates compliance with national quality health standards and hospital accreditation. The SAFERsleep System aids accreditation compliance and contributes to the implementation of the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist.
10 Simple software integration
Designed with simple onsite integration in mind, the system software has been developed with open architecture to enable data integration and transfer between SAFERsleep and existing hospital information systems.
